How to Style a Trench Coat

How to Style a Trench Coat

A trench coat is a Fall / Spring fashion staple and in this guide we will show you how to style a French coat to help you look chic no matter the weather.

Best Color Trench Coat to wear

The trench coat is one of the most verstaile shoulder season items to have in your capsule wardrobe. However our favorite trench coat colors tend to be those in more classic neutral colors such as:

  • tan
  • beige
  • navy and
  • black.

As trench coats are a fashion staple that transcends seasons, we recommend picking a trench coat that is more neutral so that it becomes something that you wear for seasons to come. This is always why we recommend buying a slightly more expensive trench coat. Trench coats will never go out of style so you are better to buy well and buy once!

A classic Burberry trench coat costs around 2000USD which although lovely is not a price tag for everything. For this reason we recommend looking to spend between 100-300USD on your trench coat.

How to Style a Trench Coat

One of the things we love about a trench coat is that you can wear it no matter where you are heading and it is a great day to night transition piece, especially in the shoulder season.

Our favorite ways of styling a trench coat are:

Jeans and a Breton Jumper

Although the trench coats are a traditionally British item, they are definitely a fashion essential in France in October! For this reason we recommend putting together a classic French look with skinny jeans and a Breton striped jumper for a classic day time look!

With boots

In my opinion the best type of shoe to wear with a trench coat has to be a boot. Whether a classic brown ankle boot or a knee high boot paired with a dress, there isn’t a more classic Fall style.

All Black

For a true Parisian look go with an all black under outfit with a neutral colored trench coat as your top layer.

Pop of Color

But if monochorome and black outfits aren’t your thing, then why not add a pop of color to your trench coat outfit with some neon shoes or accessories.

Depending on the color of your trench coat depends on the color you should pop with. However personally I don’t think you can go wrong with red with any color.

Floral Dress

If you want the classic Spring trench coat look, pair your trench coat with a pretty floral dress!

The silhouette of a trench coat is streamline when you have the belt tie cinched around the waist. It is therefore a great silhouette to pair with more of a statement hat. I like to pair my trench with a wide brimmed suede hat on dry autumnal days.

High Neck Sweater

A great way to enhance the silhouette of the classic trench is pairing it with a dark sweater with a high neck, turtle neck or cowell neck to add some drama to your neckline.

Leggings and Sneakers

One of the things that I love about trench coats are they are a clasic style that always look smart. But why not pair your trench with leggings and sneakers for an elevated casual look that is perfect for shopping, museums and mooching around the city or just running errands.

Joggers

Another way a trench can elevate your look is with a matching jogger / sweater outfit. Just be sure you don’t have a beige sweater set with a beige trench. It is better to have at least a little bit of color variation.

Ballet Flats

Although I wear boots most of the time with my trench, on a nice weather day I love to pair it with a pair of cute ballet flats. These and some capri pants are a great way to emulate the classic Audrey Hepburn look!

Best Trench Coats

So now you know some classic trench coat styles. We will look at the best trenches. Although Burberry is undoubtedly the master of the trench coat, not all of us want to spend the Burberry price tag. However as a classic capsule wardrobe item it is worth spending a bit more. As I always say buy well and buy once. Some of our favorite trench of the moment are:

London Fog

London Fog have a heritage in making coats and trenches. Although not the most expensive trenches on the market they are usually of a good quality and are a great starter trench.
