But before we get onto what to pack it is first worth know what the weather is like year round.
Weather in Columbia
One of the things that you will know about Columbia is that it isn’t a 365 daty tropical climate and where you are in the country will greatly affect what clothes you need to pack.
Cartagena is the tropical part of Columbia and as such the weather is pretty consistent with temperatures ranging from 24-32C aka 71-90F. December to March tends to be the drier season in Cartagena while during the rest of the year you should prepare for lots of tropical rain storms.
In Bogata however you will find the weather considerably cooler with temperatures typically ranging from 6 -20 degrees aka 42 – 62F depending on the month of travel.
Dress Codes for Columbia
As i mentioned above, where you are traveling in Columbia will affect the weather but it will also affect the dress code and what locals wear. In Cartagena and Medellin you will see more resort wear, tropical patterns and a less conservative style.
Bogata by comparison, being the business center of the country tends to be more conservative in its style. For this reason you will want to have an outfit like linen trousers and blouse with you if you plan to explore Bogata.
What to wear in Columbia Year Round
Maxi Dresses and Skirts
A Maxi dress is a staple of my Columbia packing lists especially for Medellin and Cartagena. I try and pick one made of a natural fabric such as cotton or linen so it is more breathable.

T Shirts
A T Shirt /blouse made of natural fabric is a great staple, especially for days when you will spend lots of time outside.
Blouse
I find a blouse a useul addition for exploring the more conservative Bogata.
Linen Trousers
If you do plan on going to some more upscale restaurants or simply for wandering around cities we recommend packing a smarter pair of linen trousers to pair with a blouse.
Swimwear
With the heat and humidity on the coast a dip in a pool can be a great way to cool off after a day of sightseeing or just for visiting a beach. Therefore be sure to pack plenty of swimwear with you.
If you plan to do some watersports we also recomend having a rash vest and shorts with you for added sun and coral protection.
Shorts
Shorts are a good pick for beaches and for days exploring outside. Running shorts and quick dry shorts are a great pick in the heat. I personally try and avoid denim shorts as they are uncomfortable in the heat.
Hiking Trousers and long sleeve shirt
If you want to go hiking in one of the national parks or around the clour forest recommend packing some hiking trousers and a long sleeve top that will protect you from insects. Also it may surprise with how cool it can get at altitude so those long sleeve tops are an essential.
Note about hiking trousers: I like to have convertible hiking trousers that can be worn as both trousers and shorts.
Sweater
An essential for cooler days
Waterproof Jacket
Although Columbia has a rainy and a dry season we recommend keeping a waterproof rain jacket with you no matter when you travel. We think the compact packaway ones are best as these can be stored away easily during sunny spells.
Underwear
This goes without saying.
Pashmina
For any trip to Columbia whatever time of year you are traveling we recommend taking a pashmina as it is a handy extra layer if you are somewhere with lots of air con.
Pyjamas
Sun hat
The sun is very strong in Columbia all year round so to protect your face from the sun while walking around the city and for hanging out on the beach.
Sunglasses
Sun safety in Columbia is very important so be sure to pack a good pair of sunglasses that have good UV Protection.
