What to Wear in Barcelona in February
Best Shoes for Barcelona in February
Although I like to pack light, I always find it tempting to overpack on the shoe front. However for Winter I recommend packing two types of shoes. They are:
Sneakers
Sneakers are my top pick for Barcelona no matter the time of year. Barcelona is a city that is best seen by foot but it is hilly and full of cobbled stones. Therefore you need a shoe with good arch support.
Therefore to cope with this terrain we recommend packing sneakers. My favorite brand of sneakers for walking are Hoka and AllBirds, however you also can’t go wrong with a plain white sneaker as they go with everything. One of my favorite pairs of white sneakers is the Adidas Cloud Foam shoes.
Ankle Boots
I also like a boot for Barcelona in February especially for nights out.
When selecting a boot for Barcelona we recommend packing an ankle boot as they don’t take as much room in the suitcase, and one with a low or no heel that can cope with the terrains.

What to Wear in Barcelona in February for women
But before we get onto the specifics of what to wear in Barcelona in February we wanted to reiterate that we think it is a great idea to pack a capsule wardrobe. Some of our favorite ways to pack a capsule wardrobe for Barcelona include:
Jacket / Coat
Barcelona has quite mild winters, even by comparison to the rest of Spain. However we still recommend packing a coat or jacket for BArcelona.
Though the days are relatively mild, evenings and nights can be cold. For this reason we recommend packing a puffer jacket or coat for nights in the city.
Skirts and dresses
Barcelona is warm enough that dresses and skirts should still be on your packing list for February. You will see all fashion styles in Barcelona, so pack the style you are most comfy in.
However you will also one modest Barcelona outfit for visiting the Sagrada Familia.
For this reason I usually stick with a maxi dress with a sleeve or a midi length skirt or dress that can be worn with sneakers or with boots and tights depending on the weather.
I also like a sweater dress or a jumper dress for going out to dinner in Barcelona in Winter.
Trousers
Trousers are also a great pick for Barcelona. It is still cool enough in February for jeans so I would always pack a pair of jeans on your packing list for this time of year.
And one of the great things about Barcelona is that you can wear the style you are most comfortable in as you will see all sorts of styles on the streets of Barcelona.
On top of jeans I usually pack a plain black pair of trousers too. If you want a smarter pant then we love a regular black pant (we love the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel). But corduroy jeans and wool trousers are also great picks too.
T Shirt
T Shirts are great in Barcelona at any time of year. I recommend having a mix of both long and short sleeves.
Blouse
A loose blouse works perfectly for warmer days and cooler nights. And something with a longer sleeve is better for Barcelona in Winter than a short sleeve one.
Layers
For a week in Barcelona I would normally pack 3 types of layers:
- merino wool sweaters for nights,
- a casual hoodie for sightseeing, and
- a caridgan
Click here to shop merino wool sweaters.
Pashmina
A pashmina should be on your Barcelona packing list whatever the month of travel but for February it is useful as an added layer as well as for making outfits modest.
PJs or Nightie
I prefer to have a heavier weight PJ for Barcelona in Winter.
Underwear and Socks
Goes without saying.
Sunglasses
Sunglasses are essential in Barcelona even in Winter.
What to pack for Barcelona in February for Men
The essentials for men for Barcelona are:
Jacket
Again a Winter jacket such as a puffer jacket is perfect for Barcelona in February.
Chinos/Jeans
Chinos / dockers and jeans are perfect for men visiting Barcelona in February. Click here to shop men’s travel trousers.
T Shirts and Shirts
For February a mix of long and short sleeve tees are a good idea. While shirts may be more serviceable at night.
Layers
Again, I recommend packing 3 types of layers as part of a sudoku wardrobe for Barcelona in Febraury. For example, 1 hoodie, 1 sweater and 1 jumper.
Sunglasses
I pack these even in Winter.
Underwear, Socks and Pjs
What to Pack for Barcelona in February (non clothing)
So now you know what to pack for Barcelona in February in terms of clothes and shoes, we will turn our attention to non clothing essentials.
- Universal travel Adaptor – For my American readers you will need an EU Type C Country plug adapter
- Power Pack / Battery recharger – you will be using your phone a lot of travel, maps and of course photos so it is worth keeping a power pack in your day bag.
- Crossbody bag – one with plenty of zips that can put off pick pockets is best. Unfortunately there is a problem with pickpockets in Barcelona as there are in many big cities that are tourist attractions. I am not saying this to scare you but because I really think careful bag selection is important for Barcelona. Therefore one link this with lots of zips that you wear across your body is the best deterrent.
- Backpack – for storing items on your day trips i.e. to Montserrat.
- camera – it is a beautiful city you will want to take lots of photographs
- Toiletries – for our full toiletries packing list check out this post.
- Travel First Aid Kit
- Blister plasters

FAQs about February in Barcelona Packing List
Should I take swimwear for Barcelona in February?
It is unlikely you will need to have swimwear for Barcelona in February. Generally speaking the sea temperature tends to remain around 16C in February which in my humble opinion is too cold for swimming in.
Also few hotels have heated pools and many will close their pools entirely for Winter (when we stayed at the Hotel Miramar in Winter they closed their pool). Therefore it is highly unlikely you are going to need swimwear if you are visiting Barcelona in February.
Can I wear shorts in Barcelona in February?
There are no Spain dress code rules that prevent you wearing shorts however I personally find trousers more comfortable to shorts for the weather at this time of year.
Are there special events in Barcelona in February with a special dress code?
There are no events in Barcelona in February which are likely to affect your packing list.
What to wear to dinner in Barcelona in February?
Barcelona is a great foodie city so it is not a surprise that many people worry about what to wear to dinner in Barcelona.
However it really depends on the type of restaurant you are going to as to the dress code. For tapas you can usually dress casually to smart casual while in the higher end Michelin starred restaurants you are more likely to see smart casual dress.
I personally either wear jeans (for tapas) or smarter trousers and blouse or a dress with tights and boots for going out to dinner in Barcelona in February.
