Weather in Milan in June

June is the start of Summer in Milan, as it is throughout Italy. However Milan, like Venice is one of the more Northern cities in Italy, so isn’t as hot as in the South.

However this does not mean it isn’t important to dress for heat. As the temperatures in the city begin to increase you need to be sure that you pack light breathable natural fabrics that will reduce sweat and help you cope sightseeing in the Italian summer heat.

Note: the weather between months changes quite dramatically in Milan and surrounding region and there are always special events in Italy which can affect both your attire and your ability to visit certain attractions. If your trip spans a couple of months then please be sure to check out our other monthly and regional Italy guides:

How hot is Milan in June?

Summer in Milan is hot hot hot. June is admittedly the coolest of the summer months but you can still expect lots of sunshine.

The average high temperature in June tends to be around 27C/ 80.6°F as the average high and have an average low of 18C/ 64.4F which can make touring in the heat somewhat uncomfortable.

Now while the temperatures do get higher towards the end of the month I would still make sure I had a couple of layers with you for eating out and those cooler days. And as always I would never travel to Milan without my trusty pashmina especially if you are planning to visit the Cathedral in Milan, which like all Italian churches has a strict dress code.

And remember the temperature fluctuates greatly between months check out our monthly florentine guides:

Does it rain a lot in June in Milan?

Milan in June is actually quite dry with only 6 days of rainy weather across the entire month. And when the rain does come it tends to be in showers rather than deluges. Therefore you don’t need to be overly concerned with packing waterproof wear and umbrellas if traveling to the city June.

What to Wear in Milan in June

As we said, Milan in June is hot, therefore it is important to pack for the heat. You want lots of light fabrics that are natural rather than manmade that will reduce sweat.

Whether you are a man, woman or child traveling to Milan I would stick to the below fabrics to help you cope with the heat:

  • Cotton
  • Linen
  • Silk

However it is worth noting that although Milan is very hot in summer, Milanos and Italians in general don’t tend to show a lot of skin in the cities. For this reason we recommend wearing midi and maxi dresses and skirts or linen or loose cotton trousers instead of short shorts and crop tops to help blend in the with the locals more.

If you do decide to pack linen be sure to check out our guide on how to pack linen to prevent wrinkles.

But we will give more details on each of these in our the below section on what to wear in Milan in June.

What to wear in Milan in June for Women

Trousers

June in Milan is hot. And with the heat jeans are really not a good fit for Milan. You will just be too hot in them.

Instead we recommend ditching the jeans for a more light weight trouser.

A linen trouser or even a pair of loose cotton trousers are perfect for Milan in June.

Longer length skirts and dresses

Short skirts and dresses are always on my what not to wear in Italy list and this even includes the fashion capital that is Milan. That is because locals really don’t tend to show a lot of skin and they are not appropriate in lots of Milanese tourist attractions such as churches like the Cathedral..

However midi and maxi length skirts and dresses are great and are good for day to night transition outfits. Just be sure that whatever skirts you pack don’t reveal your knee. This is especially important if your skirt has a slit in it.

This is because when visiting Italian churches you need to be modest in your dress which includes having knees covered up.

Blouse

A loose blouse works perfectly for warmer days and cooler nights and perfect for evenings when you decide to dine alfresco.

Floral patterns are very popular at this time of year.

T Shirt

I always pack a few t shirts when visiting Milan no matter the time of year.

For this time of year cotton short sleeve t shirts are preferable to long sleeve ones. And I would always choose t shirts that are plain in color without large slogans or graphics as these aren’t something locals tend to wear.

Cardigan

Although you are unlikely to need thick jumpers during the day in June, a cardigan is great for cooler days and as an extra evening layer especially if you want to enjoy some al fresco dining in June.

PJs or Nightie

Lightweight pyjamas and nighties are perfect especially as much of the accommodation in Milan does not have air conditioning.

Sunglasses

The sun in bright in Milan whatever month you visit so don’t come without a pair of sunglasses. For June you need to make sure the pair you bring with you has good UV protection.

Sunhat

I always recommend taking a sun hat if you are visiting Milan in summer. Wide brimmed hats are very popular choices for summer in Milan and make for very cute instagram photos.

Underwear and Socks

Goes without saying.

We recommend packing sneaker socks with you if you plan on wearing sneakers in the city (Which is out preferred shoe. More on that later). The reason for this is that it will help reduce odor and swear.,

What to pack for Milan in June for Men

The rules and layers that a you will want to pack for men in Milan in Summer is similar to the guidance for women. For instance making sure you pack lots of loose and natural fabrics

For this reason we recommend packing the below items:

Chinos/Linen Trousers

Chinos and linen trousers are perfect for men in June.

Again as with our packing list for women we recommend leaving the jeans at home as these will likely be too warm.

Shorts

Shorts are also a good pick for men in the city but to blend in more with local style we recommend wearing tailored slim fit shorts as opposed to cargo shorts. Cargo shorts will definitely mark you as a tourist in the city.

T Shirts and Shirts

Again I would bring more short sleeve T shirts for this time of year and stick to darker coloured tees to not look like a tourist.

Button down shirts, especially short sleeve ones are good for evenings in Milan.

Sunglasses

for the reasons we said above

Sneakers

I’m always surprised by how many people worry about wearing sneakers in Italy. There seems to be a vicious internet rumour that tells people these are a big no no in Italy.

However let me tell you they are not only fine but also the perfect shoe for Milan in Summer.

Fashion trainers tend to be more in keeping with locals over sports sneakers but any is fine.

Sneakers are best because they can cope with large amounts of walking and standing you will be doing. Just be sure to pick a lightweight pair for summer.

My personal go to summer sneaker at the moment is the All Birds Summer sneaker but this is just personal preference.

Sandals

Sandals are great for the day in the heat and are also my go to shoe for  dinner in Italy where the locals do tend to dress for dinner. This is especially true in Milan.

What Else to Pack for Milan in June

  • Travel Adaptor
  • Power Pack / Battery recharger
  • Crossbody bag – one with plenty of zips that can put off pick pockets is best.
  • Sunscreen – always needed in Italy.
  • Aloe Vera / After sun – should the worst happen and you get burnt
