Weather in Tuscany in Summer (June, July, August)
Generally speaking the weather in Tuscany in Summer is hot. A great thing about visiting Tuscany in Summer is that there is plenty of sunlight hours which give you ample time for exploring.
However the days are also hot and humid which makes your packing list especially important.
But although this is a summer packing list it is worth noting that there are some differences in temperature between the different summer months.
Tuscany in June has average temperatures of 77-83°F (25-28°C) in the day, while at night the average 67-73F (15-18C).
However there will be days when the temperatures hits 30C. This is more likely to be experienced if you are traveling later in the month and the temperatures always feel hotter in the city to the countryside.
July and August in Tuscany tend to be the hottest months in Tuscany, with August usually taking the title for hottest month of the year.
Average temperatures in August and July in Tuscany tends to be 82-95°F (28-35°C).
Is Tuscany rainy in Summer?
Generally speaking Tuscany in summer is a dry place with little to no rain fall.
On average there is only 13mm of rain across the whole month so I wouldn’t be too concerned about having lots of long rainy days.
For instance in Tuscany in July there is usually only 6mm of rain. Therefore you shouldn’t worry too much about wearing waterproof wear during your Tuscan Summer vacation.

How do local people dress in Tuscany in Summer?
Locals in Tuscany know the most important thing to know is that you need to dress for the heat. However you are unlikely to find locals wearing short skirts and short shorts. Instead you will find that locals tend to wear loose, flowing clothing and natural fabric.
And you will find that no matter what month you visit Tuscany that the local Tuscans are a fashionable bunch.
What to Wear to Tuscany in Summer for Women
When putting together you wardrobe for Tuscany in Summer I recommend trying to pack a capsule wardrobe to reduce space and potentially even travel with carry on alone.
This reduces the risk of losing luggage and also to reduce space your luggage takes up in your likely small Italian accommodation.
Some of the key pieces in your what to wear to Tuscany in Summer wardrobe should include
Trousers
There is a rumor that jeans are not acceptable in Italy. This is not true and jeans are ok to wear in Italy. However I do not recommend them for Tuscany during the summer.
Linen trousers are great as they are breathable and light weight and cope well with the heat during Tuscany summers.
However chinos are also great for evenings or when going out for dinner in Italy and dining al fresco on cooler evenings.

Longer length skirts
I would put short skirts on the what not to wear in Italy list. Instead I recommend taking longer length skirts or midi skirts. These are suitable to wear in Italian churches and will fit in with locals more.
If you are visiting Tuscany the chances are you will be visiting many beautiful churches such as the Duomo in Florence and Siena so you need to make sure at least one of two outfits is church compliant.

Blouse
A loose blouse works for the cooler evenings or day.s Italians are a smart bunch so a nice blouse is the perfect Tuscan Summer Packing List addition.
T Shirt
T Shirts are a great base for Tuscany in Summer.
I recommend sticking to plain and dark colours instead of t shirts that have a graphic or text and that are in loud colors as this will make you look like a tourist in Tuscany.
Pashmina
It doesn’t matter where I am traveling, a pashmina is always on my packing list especially for Italy. And Tuscany in Summer is no exception.
A pashmina can be used as a scarf or lovely accessory but can double up as an added extra layer or help provide some added modesty for churches in required.
Swimwear
Only for if your accommodation has a pool.
PJs
Lightweight are recommended as not all Tuscany accommodation will have in Summer.
Underwear and Socks
What to Wear in Tuscany in Summer for Men
For men visiting Tuscany in Summer, I actually recommend actually keeping things similar to the ladies packing list. The items we recommend including on your mens Tuscan Summer packing list are:
Chinos/ Linen Trousers
Having a couple of Pairs of linen trousers and chinos with you are essential. They work for day and night and will help you keep cool.
Shorts
Although Chinos and linens are great for traveling in both cities and countryside, for days when you are not visiting churches you will also want to have some shorts with you.
T Shirts and Shirts
During the day t shirts are great. For men short sleeve tees are probably going to be the most useful for you.
Again I would recommend avoiding anything with a graphic or slogan or in overly loud colors if you want to fit in with the locals.
You should also pack at least one button down shirt with you for Tuscany in Summer for going out to dinner.
However if shirts aren’t your thing then be sure to pack a smart polo.
Swimwear
Only for if your accommodation has a pool.
PJs
Lightweight are recommended as not all Tuscany accommodation will have in Summer.
Underwear and Socks
Goes without saying
Best Shoes for Tuscany in Summer
Sneakers
Sneakers are my go to shoe for Tuscany in the summer.
They can cope with the warmer weather while also being good for your feet on cobbled and uneven streets.
I would personally pick more of a fashion pair as opposed to sports ones to fit in more with the locals but any pair is better than no pair. But go with whatever you feel most comfortable in.
Just remember to wear your sneakers in BEFORE your trip if you decide to buy new ones.
Sandals
Sandals are perfect for summer in Tuscany. Just be sure you are comfortable to walk in them especially over cobbles and uneven surfaces.
And if you want to have something with height then we recommend a wedge instead of a stiletto heel as these are better for the surfaces in Tuscany.
Hiking Boots
For if you are planning on going hiking in Tuscany only. And if you are hiking in summer a hiking sandal may be more appropriate.
What Else to Pack for Tuscany in Summer
- Sunscreen – the sun is strong in Italy in the summertime
- Aloe Vera
- Crossbody bag – unfortunately any tourist site attracts pickpockets and Italy is no different. Protect your belongings by having a crossbody bag with lots of zips.
- Universal Travel Adaptor – very important for those traveling from outside of Europe as Rome uses standard European plugs.
- Power Pack / Battery recharger
- Reusable Water bottle – as the temperatures in August skyrocket, you will need to stay hydrated. One of my favourite things about Italy is the free water fountains around the cities so be sure to make use of them.
- Toiletries – find out full list of essential travel toiletries here.
- Medication
- Travel First Aid Kit
- Blister plasters
- Camera
